My Painting Story

My name is Nancy Stender and my love for homes and design stretches as far back as I can remember.

I would spend time at Auntie Marj's in the city and marvel at all the channels on their TV and then select.....the Real Estate Channel! I was amazed at all the homes, their unique looks and the extravagances they had to offer and then I would dream.

When I was in grades 4,5 & 6 I took ceramic lessons in downtown Kipling and was memorized how colour impacted every aspect of a piece. How Shannon and I could take the same item to start and end with two totally different looking and feeling products. 

Next, I started convincing my parents that my bedroom needed a colour change, then the bathroom needed updating, then their bedroom, onto the kitchen and finally their living room, many years later. I would eagerly head down to the hardware store in Kipling to stand in awe of the magnificent paint chip display. I would pick out varying shades of the "approved colour choice" and race back home for anticipated review. 

My serious interest in painting started in 2006 with the purchase of a new home in Regina Beach, which I desperately wanted to paint and just as desperately did not want to ruin. The entire house was WHITE, I'm thinking, "Perfect for Change", my partner is just thinking, "Perfect". So when they went away for school, I called my sister-in-law, a professional painter of 40+ years and asked her for any and all help she could provide. She introduced me to a passion that has grown exponentially from that night forward.

For Christmas the next year I was received a Benjamin Moore Paint Fan Deck (Thank you, Jason) and from that day forward I have painted pretty much everything I can get my hands on.

I have painted one wall to entire houses for friends, family and myself.

Learning to paint on my own has afforded me the freedom to paint what, as I want. 

Permitting me to experiment with bold colours, creating a colour selection process taking in several factors including room functionality, window positioning and light exposure, time of day lighting variations and decor.

Feature walls have introduced me to a creativity I didn't even know I had or desired. Imagining baby rooms, inventing individualized children's rooms and play spaces. Accentuating glamorous dining rooms and creating inviting, warm family spaces alike.

Over this time I have acquired a small collection of professional painting tools and an even larger collection of wall finishing advice from a few perfectionists along the way.

Recently, I have began to take on projects for others and am looking forward to having the opportunity to paint your dreams next.
